MAINTENANCE

Electric vehicles (EVs) require significantly less fluid maintenance than conventional cars but still need regular checks for essential systems, including brake fluid, coolant for the battery/motor, and windshield washer fluid.

Key maintenance includes replacing brake fluid every 2–5 years, changing battery coolant every 5–15 years, and checking reduction gear (transmission) oil, often around 80,000–100,000 miles.

Key Fluids to Maintain

• Brake Fluid: Crucial for safety and longevity. While regenerative braking reduces wear, brake fluid still absorbs moisture over time, needing replacement every 2 to 5 years.

• Battery/Drive Unit Coolant: EVs use liquid cooling to manage battery and motor temperatures. These systems typically need servicing or flushing every 5–15 years, depending on the manufacturer (some are designed to be "lifetime" fluids).

• Reduction Gear Fluid (Gearbox Oil): While many EVs have no, or long-interval, recommendations, lubricating the electric motor's gearbox is necessary. Some manufacturers recommend changing this around 80,000 to 100,000 miles.

• Windshield Washer Fluid: The only fluid that requires regular, frequent topping up, just like a traditional car.

Maintenance Tips

• Check the Owner's Manual: Maintenance schedules differ widely between brands (e.g., Tesla vs. Hyundai vs. GM).

• Watch for Leaks: Although rare, cooling system leaks can cause serious performance issues.

• 12V Battery Check: While not a fluid, the 12-volt battery should be tested regularly, as it is crucial for starting and running the systems.

Note: EVs do not require engine oil, oil filters, or transmission flushes for traditional multi-speed transmissions.

Power Steering & Clutch fluids may be required depending on the model unit

Aluminum. Stainless Steel. Copper. A vast connected effort
Domestic & Imports

As of early April 2026, aluminum futures are trading around $3,450–$3,500 USD per tonne, showing significant 52-week strength. In Canada, localized scrap aluminum prices range from approximately $0.50 CAD per lb for cans to $1.25 CAD per lb for rims, while industrial stock like 6061-T6 aluminum angle is priced around $12.98 CAD per foot.

Stainless steel prices in Canada are rising, with base prices for 304 and 316 grades increasing as of July 2026 due to market adjustments, with 304 grade rising by $0.14-0.15lb. While nickel prices have stabilized around $7lb, new tariffs are driving up industrial project costs by up to, affecting 304, 316, and 430 grades.
