TRADITIONAL COMPRESSION

Air compression is the second crucial stage of a jet engine's Brayton cycle, utilizing axial or centrifugal compressors to increase incoming air pressure by a factor of 4 or more, often reaching 50 times atmospheric pressure in modern engines, raising its temperature and density for efficient combustion before entering the burner. This high-pressure air allows for intense, continuous combustion, creating high-velocity exhaust that powers the turbine and creates thrust.

• How Compression Works: Compressors use multiple stages—each consisting of a spinning rotor and a fixed stator—to progressively compress the air. Rotors increase kinetic energy, while stators convert this speed into high-pressure air.

• Types of Compressors:

• Axial Compressors: These are the most common, especially in high-performance engines, where air flows parallel to the engine axis. They can have up to 20 stages and are highly efficient.

• Centrifugal Compressors: These work by slinging air radially outwards, useful for smaller, more compact engines.

• Purpose: Compressing the air increases the efficiency of the combustion process by ensuring the fuel burns in a highly pressurized environment, producing maximum energy.

• Components: The compressor is part of the gas generator (along with the combustor and high-pressure turbine), generally driven by the turbine located behind the combustion chamber.

The compressor stage is essential to turning the potential energy of fuel into the kinetic energy needed for flight.
